We’re Spending $18 billion On Mom For Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is May 13th and is fast approaching.
If National Retail Federation’s predictions come true, moms will be in for an especially good Mother’s Day this year. According to NRF’s 2012 Mother’s Day consumer spending survey conducted by BIGinsight, the average person celebrating the holiday is expected to spend $152.52 on gifts, up from $140.73 last year. Total spending is expected to reach $18.6 billion.
That’s a lot of dough, not that Mom isn’t worth it! But what do people buy for Mother’s Day?
Flowers (no surprise there) – over 65 percent of those surveyed will buy flowers, for $2.2 billion
Clothing – one-third of consumers will buy apparel for Mom, for $1.6 billion
Gadgets – 12 percent will buy Mom a tablet, phone or camera, for $1.6 billion
Dining – over 50 percent will take Mom out for dinner or brunch, for $3.4 billion
Gift Cards – about $1.8 billion
Personal Services – a spa day or mani/pedi’s will total $1.3 billion
Department stores will see the most Mother’s Day shoppers with nearly 40 percent planning to buy gifts there. About 30 percent of shoppers will head to discount stores – nothing says I love you Mom like a gift from the Dollar Store!
Most interesting is the continual shift to online shopping. One-quarter (25.6 percent) of shoppers will buy their gifts online, up from 21.5 percent last year. The continual erosion of business from bricks and mortar stores has to be alarming for single channel merchants.
So open up your wallet and spend $150 on Mom. She’s worth it…even if all she wants to do is scream.
